Day 5: Badlands

First off, how great a name is "Badlands?"  Just makes it sound like something really awful is going to happen here.  Which is essentially true--early travelers gave this area that name because the land was so hard to travel across, the temperatures got super high, and there was not much freshwater to be had here.  I sort of imagine it to be like playing Oregon Trail as the carpenter (and not the banker).

Today was the first time I put away the iPhone and really started to play with my DSLR camera (Nikon D60).  I took a ton of pictures with really mixed results---I'm having a tough time adjusting the settings to get the colors I really want.  With the sun being really bright today, it was tough to get some contrasting colors in the photos.  I seemed to do a lot better with my dad's D90 camera (I guess paying twice as much for a camera should result in better photos).

Not much in the way of good food today--there's not much of anything in this part of the country.  The few places that came highly recommended were closed today (I guess Sundays still mean something out here in middle America?).

Day 5: Random shit

So while driving on I-90W, the casual road tripper is inundated with signs for all kinds of random kitschy sights like "Museum of Religious Art" and "Wall Drug." The one we chose to stop at was "World's Only Corn Palace."

Basically it is a palace-like building that houses a gymnatorium but the outside murals are made from ears corn (mostly yellow and black).

Apparently the locals have trouble remembering what year it is.
