Mediocre television

I watch a lot more TV than I used to, and my TiVo is one of the big reasons why. It's really convenient, because a) you never have to make an appointment to watch TV and b) it takes about 20% less time to watch a show, because you can skip through the commercials in about 5 seconds.

I've noticed that one of the side effects of having a TiVo is that I'll regularly watch TV shows that aren't that great (and yes, I'm aware of how sad that is). One example of this is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, a drama/comedy about a late-night sketch comedy show that is a dead ringer for "Saturday Night Live." I started watching because Aaron Sorkin is the writer and creator. Sorkin wrote "A Few Good Men", but is probably better known for creating the "West Wing" and the lesser known "Sports Night." Never got into West Wing (too preachy at times), but I thought "Sports Night" was fantastic and terribly underrated.

Studio 60 isn't bad, but the frustrating thing is that I feel it has the potential to be so much better. But what really bothers me is that I can't figure out exactly WHAT would actually make it better, AND I keep watching this show even though I don't think it's that great. The biggest draw for me is the smart-aleck dialogue, probably because well....I'm a smart-aleck. The biggest complaint I have: too preachy at times.

One thing I do think the show has done particularly well is the occasional musical performance. Sting had a really good acoustic version of "Fields of Gold" earlier this year, and most recently they had some New Orleans jazz musicians perform a fantastic arrangement of "O Holy Night." I liked it so much, I downloaded it off of NBC's website and added it to my Christmas playlist.
